Goodbye to a True Stalwart

Teignmouth said goodbye yesterday to one of its true stalwarts.
And everyone at The Teignmo'thian would like to add to the tributes to Cynthia Rose Holmes who almost single-handedly got Kingsway the Community Centre that has offered so much to so many.

Cynthia was one of the contestants in our Star Teignmo'thian competition which aims to recognise the unsung heroes among us. She was one such heroine.
She passed away suddenly but peacefully, aged 70, at her Mill Lane home on August 17 and was buried in Teignmouth Cemetery yesterday after a service in the town's Baptist Church.

Cynthia Holmes
Cynthia embodied the concept of community spirit and was a leading light in the fight to get a community centre for Kingsway.
Cynthia was well known for having a heart of gold her belief in community.
With a determination of steel and the support of her husband, Tony, she set  about raising money and awareness for the need for such a facility in the  town.
Many believe that there would be no such facility as the Kingsway Centre  now had it not been for Cynthia who was one of a group of people who  wanted a community hall facility and refused to be put off by any views  that cost made one unattainable.
She was dogged in her determination and was the one who refused to give  up.
She got a committee together and moved heaven and earth to make the  community centre a reality.
Cynthia won the battle to get the £71,000 needed to build the 80-foot  long building and adjoining venture playground.
She put no price on the abundance of time and energy she devoted to the
project, often to her own personal cost.
The building was opened in 1981 by the then Chief Constable John Alderton
and it was known as the West Teignmouth Community Association.
Now known as the Meadow Centre which has recently been in financial trouble
but is rising from the ashes, the centre has been  used every day and is a
real asset to the community.
Although the committee ran the centre for years, the time came when it
seemed right to pass it over to the district council.
At the time of her nomination for Star Teignmo'thian, her husband Tony told The Teignmo'thian: "If anyone deserves some recognition for what  she has done for her town and local community in giving unselflishly  of her time and herself to benefit others then I would be proud to nominate my wife, Cynthia Rose Holmes"
